Fault Code Issue, any ideas?

I went to leave the can show last night and when I started the car to leave it briefly puffed some smoke from the pipes, I was like what the Fu%#!!, idle was OK but didn't seem as stable, and the throttle didn't seem as crisp as usual just off idle. I noticed the check engine light was on. I got the car home late last night around 12:30 so I didn't check the car then. This morning I hooked up the Predator and ran the diag.. Code P0300 Random Misfire Detected came up on the scanner. Anyone know what's going on here? Thanks for any help.

Re: Fault Code Issue, any ideas?

My answer is this You need to take it to the dealer and I tell you this with love a real dealer and honestly I would say that even my guy at brandwine will not be able to fix it. Why? Because of that supercharger. I would contact Hurst on this ASAP!! But you should also call Josh HHP ASAP. You have my phone number if you can;t get thru to him I will call him on the bat phone lol and give him your number!

Now what does that code mean? Here is wha=y I would not drive the car.

What does that mean?

Basically this means that the the car's computer has detected that not all of the engine's cylinders are firing properly.

A P0300 OBD DTC code indicates a random or multiple misfire. If the last digit is a number other than zero, it corresponds to the cylinder number that is misfiring. A P0302 code, for example, would tell you cylinder number two is misfiring. Unfortunately, a P0300 doesn't tell you specifically which cylinder(s) is/are mis-firing, nor why.

Symptoms

Symptoms may include:

  • the engine may be harder to start
  • the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate
  • other symptoms may also be present

Causes

A code P0300 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • Faulty spark plugs or wires
  • Faulty coil (pack)
  • Faulty oxygen sensor(s)
  • Faulty fuel injector(s)
  • Burned exhaust valve
  • Faulty catalytic converter(s)
  • Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages
  • Faulty camshaft position sensor
  • Defective computer

Possible Solutions

If there are no symptoms, the simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.

If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of your regular maintenance schedule. I would suggest spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils (a.k.a. coil packs). In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. I've also heard in other cases the problems were faulty fuel injectors.

Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.

Re: Fault Code Issue, any ideas?

Hey Claude thanks for the info, It's a big help to have an idea what's going on. I drove my 95 dodge down to Jarrett Dodge for the Sunday car show and to ask some folks there what they thought I should do. They said basically the same thing you said get it to your local dealer to have them check the car. Service manager at Jarrett said he recommended Bergey Dodge, which is close to me, about 4 miles. I have an appointment there for Friday afternoon. So we will see what's going on then. My car has all the latest computer updates so this is something else. There was a RRT for the no. 7 cylinder mis-fire issue back a few months ago but the latest flash for the computer was to take of that.....I wonder???

Was that Chas's R/T I saw there at the show on Sunday. It had a Procharger installed and it was red, I wasn't sure if it was Chas's truck because there was no owner around. lol :)

I'll let you know as soon as find out what the results are from the dealer visit on Friday.

Thanks again.

Re: Fault Code Issue, any ideas?

Cool I hope it works out. But I still say you don;t want just any mechanic working on your car. Some dealerships have certified SRT guys. And I would not let anyone touch it without speaking to Hurst first. No tech at any dealership would touch the car without talking to a tech at Hurst on it first! I would also give Josh a call. He would know what the problem is and if not has the people a dielblo that he could talk to that would know how to deal with it.

Re: Fault Code Issue, any ideas?

I drove the car for 10 miles today just taking it easy and it seemed to run OK. At this point as long as the car is running OK I just want to have the dealer record the fault in the cars records and reset the computer. If it happens again then we will get more serious with the diagnose routine. I will give Hurst a call on Thursday and also Josh so he can check with Diablo to see if they have heard of any other cars coding with P0300. I'm sure Josh can tell me what I should do with the Predator when the car has to go in for service at the dealer, you know, switching tunes for the service then putting the Hurst tune back in when their done. The Hurst setup with the supercharger is still covered by the factory warranty. The Hurst Predator tune is blessed by Ma Mopar. When I go in for the check on Friday I will find out what training their techs have received in regards to SRT Technologies. I would really like to have a dealer close to me that can handle my cars needs when necessary. From what I understand right now Bergeys is big on training their techs. so I would think they have an in house SRT guy. We'll see.

Re: Fault Code Issue, any ideas?

Thanks for your concern Chas and the info about Bergeys. For local dealers around my area there's only two, Bergeys and Sands Brothers in Quakertown. I'm going to find out which one has the best techs. when it comes to dealing with the SRT's. I will allow Bergeys to take a look but at this point no one is going to crack a bolt on that car until I'm sure who I'm dealing with. Man! that truck at Jarrett's sure looked a lot like yours.
